Farrow & Ball Decorative paint and wallpaper. Site for different countries. You can order online or get a list of stockists. Good product information and sample pots available.

Handles Direct handles for doors, cabinets etc. Also electrical and general hardware. Well presented with online ordering. Easy contact for information.

Homebase with over 300 stores around the country, this large site covers most areas of DIY plus it has online ordering with special offers to tempt.

Learn2.com Directory of information about various subjects. Home and garden section has information on all aspects of the home, from patio-building to home buying. Site is focussed on DIY and home design.

SalvoWEB is for architectural antiques, antique garden ornaments, reclaimed building materials and architectural salvage. Worldwide online directory.

Sanderson The wallpaper company, showing their ranges plus paints, made to measure furniture. Map helps find a store local to you. Email for a brochure.

Screwfix.com They seem to sell everything, that makes it DIY heaven with online ordering and special offers.

Strippers plenty of useful information about paint and paint stripping. It's a commercial site selling its own products but has lots to tell you about things you always wanted to know - about paint stripping.

RIBA Royal Institute of British Architects. If you want info on this subject, it's all here. Huge database of architect practices, list of 28,000 members, thousands of links. Absolutely everything (I think!) you'll ever need at home in the UK and covering the whole world.

Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors With 110 000 members in 120 countries, RICS is the world's leading professional body addressing all aspects of land, property, construction and the associated environmental issues.

Acorn & Deckhouse One of their houses was featured in the TV programme, Grand Designs, and a superb house it was, costing just £60,000. Very experienced US company with a good Web site to help you through all the stages of selecting and buying.

American Log Homes a US company based in the Netherlands and shipping worldwide. Great looking homes but no price guides. Phone, fax or email for more details.

Antique Buildings has a range of barns, stables from the UK and France. Huge selection of antique frames, oak beams etc, house "kits". Web site is comprehensive, offers architectural service, plans, complete house relocation, prices, examples.

Border Oak As the name implies, oak built homes. Masses of photos for every conceivable size of property - personal and commercial.

BuildStore Offers lots of information and commercial contacts, good finance with their Accelerator Mortgage. This is a site you should visit if you want to get into self build.

Custom Homes Interesting site with the usual case studies etc but with sample homes showing the costs (taken from Buildit Magazine). Also show a listing of exhibitions.

ebuild UK site for building your own home which makes this a must site for self-builders. UK Building Plots Data-base; Discussion Boards; Information and extensive Directory of Services.

Ecology Building Society "You do not have to be 'green' to get an Ecology mortgage. Many of our borrowers have environmental concerns, others simply want to rescue a derelict property to make into their home. If you think a property or project may interest us, please let us know about it."

egpropertylink.com has an interesting search facility which, although advertising on its home page as a commercial property finder, allows you to specify for Development Opportunity and Country properties among other criteria. Possible for conversion?

Frame Homes Explains the fundamentals and advantages of timber frame homes, with examples plus timber frame engineering.

GrowYourHome.com helps you estimate costs, including labour for your building project. Currently free but they will be charging at a later date.

Homebuilder is a Scottish site for self build, renovations and conversions for sale. Land Finder database promised soon. Unfortunately, they lock you into the site.

Homebuilding & Renovating To get the most from this site, i.e. their Plotfinder or magazine articles, you should register. For serious enthusiasts it's worth it!

Huf Haus Post and Beam architecturally built homes based on three generations within their family. Very easy to navigate with plenty of photos and follow-up information. German company but with European wide offices, including London.

NHBC is the independent regulatory body for the UK house-building industry, for information – whether buying, building or selling your home.

Landbank Services Very comprehensive self-build site with over 400 pages of information. Lists of builders, magazines, providers of materials. Lots of help here, a very good starting point. Plot finding database could do with updating!

Neatwood Homes Very hands-on site for buying materials, working out costs and plans which gives an insight of all the requirements you may need. Plenty of complete packages to choose from.

propertylive.co.uk Another all encompassing site that has a commercial section, land or site opportunity (as well as homes for rent / sale etc).

propRT.co.uk Large commercial section if you're looking for a conversion plot, warehouse etc. Good search facility.

Salvo! Architectural Salvage, Antique Garden Ornament, Reclaimed Building Materials, list of salvage sites around the UK and salvage auctions.

Scandiahus Swedish energy-saving homes with pix of finished homes, a case study, financial assistance - but no prices.

Self-Build from Build It magazine with self build planner, products and suppliers, news and features, readers homes, free ads plus FAQs and an open forum.

Selfbuild and Design Excellent set of articles to help you find your way through the maze of building your own home. There is also a good links section but you'll have to buy the magazine to enter the Plot Search.

Self-Build House Co Somewhat non-specific and not up-to-date but they do have some interesting case studies and plans.

Selfbuild It Link to National Building Plot Register which covers all of the UK. Plenty of information and links for Mortgages, Suppliers etc.

The Norwich and Peterborough have a finance scheme for self build homes. You can phone them for information or search through their Web site.

Walter Segal Self Build Trust The WSSBT is a UK trust which helps people to build their own homes and community buildings. These are timber frame post-and-beam structures, designed, built and constructed on site. They also run inexpensive 1 and 2 day courses around the country.
